Museu Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel
Centro Cultural Judaico de Pernambuco (Museu Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel) / Jewish Cultural Center of Pernambuco (Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue Museum)
Pernambuco experienced a continuous immigration of Jews in the first half of the seventeenth century, thanks to religious freedom occurring during the Dutch dominion (1630-54). In this period the first synagogue of the Americas was created in Recife: Kahal Zur Israel. The original synagogue, whose structure has recently been located under large homes off Bom Jesus Street, historically known as the Jews Street, was reconstructed and opened to the public in 2001. At this precious historical site, visitors can observe panels with information focused on the period when the Dutch were in Pernambuco and also the reconstitution of a typical Amsterdam synagogue of the seventeenth century.
