Museu Regional de São João del-Rei (Regional Museum São João del-Rei)

The building that houses the Museu Regional de São João del-Rei (Regional Museum São João del-Rei) dates back to 1859 and was once home to João Antônio da Silva Mourão, an important merchant of the city. Protected by IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage), as a historical heritage, the restoration of the building was completed in 1954. This initiated the acquisition of pieces that would form the collection of the museum in the future, made mostly of objects from the region. It was opened to the public in 1963 and is a privileged space to come in contact with objects of everyday life as well as artistic and religious traits of the society of Minas Gerais of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Notary public office documents from this same period are also part of the collection.
