Museu Histórico Abílio Barreto (Historical Museum Abílio Barreto)

Created in 1941 by mayor Juscelino Kubitschek. Its original name was Museu Histórico de Belo Horizonte (Belo Horizonte History Museum) and it started out from the History Section of the City Hall Archive (1935). It was directed by the journalist Abílio Velho Barreto and its facilities were located in the main house headquarters of the Fazenda Velha do Leitão (Velha do Leitão Farm). The construction of the farm dates back to the beginning of the village in the late nineteenth century. The house went through restoration work and the museum opened to the public in February, 1943. The institution is responsible for keeping a significant collection on the history of Belo Horizonte.
