Museu do Homem do Nordeste (Museum of the Northeastern Man)
Created in 1979 by the writer and sociologist Gilberto Freyre, the Museu do Homem do Nordeste (Museum of the Northeastern Man) Man brought together objects from three other museums: the Museu de Antropologia (Museum of Anthropology), the Museu de Arte Popular (Museum of Popular Art), and the Museu do Açúcar (Sugar Museum). Based at the Fundação Joaquin Nabuco (Joaquim Nabuco Foundation), the museum holds approximately 15,000 representative pieces of the cultural diversity of Brazilian people and their habits and social manifestations. Focusing on the cultural heritage and the formation of northeastern people, the museum creates a space for discussion and appreciation of diversity as well as strengthening of the many cultural roots that form Brazilian society and identity.
