Museu do Ceará (Museum of Ceará)
Established in 1932 and opened to the public in the following year the Museu do Ceará (Museum of Ceará) was the first official museum institution of the state. It is based at the Palacete Senador Alencar (Senator Alencar Palace), a historic building concluded in 1871 that still maintains its original architectural features. Its collection consists of over seven thousand items such as paintings, furniture, archaeological pieces and indigenous artefacts, and converses with episodes and striking movements of Brazilian history such as slavery and the abolitionist struggle. It has been operating as an important centre for reflection on local and regional history by offering qualification courses and workshops.
