Museu de Arte Sacra da Universidade Federal da Bahia (Sacred Art Museum of the Federal University of Bahia)

Result of a partnership between the Universidade Federal da Bahia (Federal University of Bahia) and the Arquidiocese de Salvador (Archdiocese of Salvador), the Museu de Arte Sacra (Sacred Art Museum) is housed in the Convento de Santa Teresa D’Ávila (Convent of St. Teresa of Avila), built between 1667 and 1676. Created with the purpose of preserving the Luso-Brazilian Sacred Art, the museum was opened in 1959 and has one of the most representative collections of its kind in Brazil, with pieces from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Alongside the sumptuous collection of gold and silver objects coming mostly from Churches and Convents of Bahia, the set of wood and terracotta sculptures and the sacred paintings are of inestimable value. The ivory image collection is admired for its preciousness and simplicity.
