Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC-Niterói)

Museu de Arte Contemporânea / MAC-Niterói (Contemporary Art Museum / MAC-Niterói)

With architectural design by Oscar Niemeyer, the extraordinary and bold MAC-Niterói building has a peculiar view of the Baía de Guanabara (Guanabara Bay) and is deeply attuned with the collection it houses. Inaugurated in 1996 to receive the art collection of João Sattamini, one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in Brazil, it quickly gained national and international reputation. To the initial 1,200 works from the João Sattamini Collection about 350 more were added, donated by artists who held exhibitions at the museum. Works from artists Aluísio Carvão, Dionísio Del Santo, Lygia Clark among others stand out.
