Museu da Imigração do Estado de São Paulo (Immigration Museum)
The Museu da Imigração (Immigration Museum) is based in the building of the former Hospedaria do Imigrante (Immigrant Lodge), which is an imposing complex, built between 1886 and 1888. The Memorial do Imigrante (Immigrant Memorial) preserves the history of Italian, Japanese and other nearly 70 ethnic groups who came to Brazil in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Lodge sheltered the newly arrived immigrants who came to work in the coffee plantations and industries. The Museu da Imigração (Immigration Museum), the Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação (Research and Documentation Centre), the Núcleo Histórico dos Transportes (Transport Historic Centre) and the Núcleo de Estudos e Tradições (Studies and Traditions Centre) form the Memorial. Its digital collection has more than 25,000 images that retell the history of immigration through iconography, cartography and newspapers.
