The entrepreneur, journalist and politician Francisco de Assis Chateaubriand (1892-1968) and Italian Pietro Maria Bardi conceived the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (São Paulo Museum of Art). It was founded in 1947 and Lina Bo Bardi designed its current headquarters, inaugurated in 1968. The MASP is home to the most important art collection in the southern hemisphere, consisting of more than 8,000 pieces of Western art, from the IV century BCE to the present day. Among the names that make up the collection are sculptors and painters such as Monet, Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Goya, Rembrandt, Diego Rivera, Siqueiros, Torres Garcia, Cândido Portinari, Anita Malfatti, Victor Brecheret and Edgar Degas.
