Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS-RIO)

Instituto Moreira Salles (Moreira Salles Institut)

The IMS was founded in 1990 by diplomat and banker Walther Moreira Salles (1912-2001) with the only purpose of developing cultural programs, especially in photography, literature, fine arts and Brazilian music. It is settled in the former residence of the Moreira Salles family, nowadays transformed into a cultural centre with outstanding gardens designed by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. The venue keeps an important collection of photographs, iconography and musical scores as well as a collection of acclaimed names like the writer Clarice Lispector, the journalist and writer Otto Lara Resende, and the poet Mario Quintana.
